What is Projekt Helix?

October 9, 2012

Liseberg is a park in Sweden that is already known for having some of the best rides in the world. The park is home to an Intamin Prefab Woodie, an accelerator coaster, and a Schwarzkopf terrain coaster. In 2014 (not 2013) Liseberg will open a Mack launched coaster codenamed Projekt Helix.

Projekt Helix looks like a sort of cross between Cheetah Hunt (at Busch Gardens Tampa) and Blue Fire (at Europa park). The  ride will start with a few turns before launching riders into a giant corkscrew. A small airtime hill will lead to a Norwegian Loop.  Another airtime hill follows this and then the ride twists through a Zero-G Roll. True to its name Projekt Helix then navigates through a helix before blasting off in the second launch. The train jumps over another airtime hill and another corkscrew. A very Cheetah Hunt-ish section comes next where the train zig-zags back and forth. There is one last heartline roll before  the final brakes.

Overall Projekt Helix will include six inversions, two launches at 62 mph, and almost 4,500 feet of track. The ride looks like it will be an excellent addition to Liseberg’s already awesome coaster lineup. Unfortunately we’ll have to wait until 2014 for it to open. Here is an animated POV (sorry about the low quality, it’s the only POV I could find):

What do you think? Please comment. Thanks for reading! 🙂

It looks okay. It seems very compact, and seems to go slow. But 62 mph is not slow, so maybe its just the video. I would like to see more interaction though. Sure it is in a forest, but it looks more like they plopped it in an open field. A tunnel, waterfall, or some fog would be nice. It looks alright but I don’t think it could stand up to either cheetah hunt or blue fire. Like I said, it may just be the video, I will have to wait to see it in 2014 and what it would really look like to judge it.
