Unique Coasters: Maverick at Cedar Point

June 14, 2012

Unique Coasters is a type of post where I highlight a certain coaster that is unique. They aren’t necessarily the largest or most insane coasters but they are one of a kind. This coaster is Maverick at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

The ride

Maverick has a wild west theme. The ride starts with a LSM powered lift hill that gets you to the top of the 105 foot first hill in less than 7 seconds. The first drop is 95 degrees, the steepest in the USA when it opened in 2007.  After the insane drop there are a number of twists and turns through rocks. The transitions of the turns are extremely fast. There is an insane airtime hill and a unique double inversion called a Twisted Horseshoe Roll. After a few more turns the ride enters a dark tunnel. Many first time riders think that the ride is over at this point because you are right beneath the station building. Actually there is another launch that rockets the train to 70 mph. The next turns are even more intense than the first ones. There are two overbanked turns and a few more airtime hills before the ride really does stop.

Why is it unique?

Maverick has everything, airtime, inversions, turns, and launches. The only coaster that similar is iSpeed (my first Unique Coasters.) Practically every reviewer says that is an excellent ride. You can read my Maverick review here, I gave it a rare 10 out of 10.

You can see other pictures of Maverick on the RCDB.

Here is a POV of Maverick.

What do you think? Do you know of another Unique Coaster? Please comment. Thanks for reading! : -)

Maverick is awesome. This small (by height) little coaster shocked the heck out of me when I rode it and it turned out to be a very thrilling and great ride. Airtime, inversions, launches, insane turns all on one ride. I love it.
