Coaster Competition: Goliath (Six Flags Magic Mountain) vs. Diamondback

November 28, 2011

Coaster Competitions are pretty much the same as the Coaster Critic’s Coaster Showdowns (I get a lot of ideas from his site). I will compare and contrast two coasters that are alike in one way or another. Today’s Coaster Showdown is between the two massive hypercoasters Goliath and Diamondback.

vs.

Theming:

Neither one of these rides has much theming. Goliath’s line is themed to a jungle. There is drum music playing in the station and mist in the middle of the trees in the line. The tunnel at the bottom of the first hill has some large boulders around it and sometimes mist. Other than this there is pretty much no theming at all. Diamondback has a nice line with some frontier theming. The station is also themed a little bit. The winner of this round is Goliath.

Setting:

Diamondback’s track ventures out into the woods and back. This means that you cannot see some of the track during the ride. It also has a lake that the ride dives through to create two rooster tails behind the train. Goliath is situated on a flat section of concrete. The winner of this round is definitely Diamondback.

Layout:

Goliath’s layout contains a 235 foot lift hill, a turn, a hill, another turn, a brake run, another turn, another turn, a helix, and yet another turn. So that was 5 turns and 1 hill that provides airtime, any hypercoaster that has more turns than it does hills is not going to get a plus in my book. Diamondback consists of a lift hill that is 230 feet tall, a hill, another hill, an overbanked turn, another hill, a helix, another hill, another hill, another helix, and a splashdown (the jump up to the brake run also provides a small pop of airtime). That is 6 airtime moments and two helixes, any hypercoaster that has more hills than it does turns gets a plus in my book. The winner here is Diamondback by a mile (maybe more).

So the winner is Diamondback!

What do you think? Should Goliath have won? Please comment. Thanks for reading! 🙂

Good battle. Yeah it is kind of stupid that goliath has only one airtime hill. Diamondback wins easily. But I think you should have put goliath at SFOG in instead of SFMM’s Goliath. SFOG’s version is much more similar to diamondback and would have been a better comparison.

    • I would have done SFOG’s Goliath but I wanted two large hypercoasters, the other Goliath is only 170 feet tall but has a drop of 200 feet so it is counted as a hypercoaster but just barely.

I looked it up on rcdb and it said that goliath is 200 feet tall, and has a 170 foot drop. But yeah it is not that tall compared to sfmm’s one and is small for a hyper.

        • Next year I should be going on Nitro so I will be able to do another Coaster Competition. This time with Nitro vs. Diamondback, I wonder who will win that…

Cool. Nitro is awesome and my favorite hypercoaster. I would love to go on diamondback and compare them as well. But next year I will have to make the comparison of SFOG’s Goliath to nitro. Nitro looks better than goliath to me, but diamondback looks awesome and has the cool seating and water splashdown. I will have to see how sfog goliath is though, cant wait!
