Dueling Dragons (Pre- Dragon Challenge Changes)
Dueling Dragons is the only inverted dueling coaster in the world, it is at Islands of Adventure. With the addition of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter Dueling Dragons has been changed to Dragon Challenge, the two dragons were changed to Chinese Fireball and Hungarian Horntail. I haven’t been on it since the change so this will be a review of the old version. There are two dragons/tracks Fire (red) and Ice (blue).
The line was a long passageway through a mid-evil castle that had been attacked by the dragons. Outside there were two enormous stone dragons in combat. As the line began you could see rooms that had been burnt or frozen in a huge battle. The second half of the line was filled with skulls and bones, while I do think they overdid it on the skulls it was still is better than the endless switchbacks that most lines have. Finally we get to a split where a sign reads “Choose thy fate”, we have a choice, to turn left was to join with the fire dragon, to the right is the ice dragon.
Fire (red) Dragon
We begin our journey up the 125 foot lift right next to the Ice dragon. At the top we dive to the left down a 115 foot drop. There is a giant Immelmann loop that sets us up for a large hill over the blue track of the Ice dragon. Our feet come very close to the feet of the other train before another drop. The next inversion is another Immelmann loop, a large turn takes us around for another close call with the other train. The vertical loop is one of the most memorable parts of the coaster because you are heading straight towards the other coaster before being yanked upwards. The rest of the ride is a lot of turns and two more corkscrews before the final brakes.
I like the Fire Dragon more than the Ice dragon, I am giving it an 8 out of 10.
Ice (blue) Dragon
Like the fire dragon we start the lift side by side with the other train. At the top we dive to the right down an airtime filled drop. There is a 270 degree turn before the first inversion, a Zero-G-Roll. This is one of the dueling sections of the ride, if you look down you can see the feet of the other dragon’s riders. A straight section of track leads us to the Cobra Roll. Next is the vertical loop, it is thrilling for the same reason as the fire dragon’s loop. There is one more corkscrew before the final brakes.
I just don’t like the Ice dragon as much as the Fire dragon, it doesn’t seem as long even though they are the same length. I am giving it a 7 out of 10.
What do you think? Which dragon do you like more? Please comment. Thanks for reading. 🙂
